What we do
During the academic year of 2011/2012 New turn hopes to achieve three things in particular; a steady university events programme, engaging sixth-form workshops and the release of a bi-annual magazine.
The events programme that we shall be running in universities shall hopefully cover a range of interests, from our banning pornography event with an active pornstar, Jonny Anglais all the way to our event analysing the possible future of Syria with Ribal Al-Assad the cousin of the current dictator, Bashir Al-Assad. At ten pounds a year, with no extra cost, New Turn's weekly event programme will offer value for money not only because of their price in relation to the regularity of our events but also because of the add ons that shall come with membership. These include the internships which we will be organising all year around for our members, tours of parliament given by MP's, and dscounts on workshops given by professionals that teach students how to write and digest policy.
Last year we ran a simple but efficient schools programme which we are not only looking to expand this time around but also to run alongside external organisations. The school programme this year shall take two forms. Firstly, we shall be working with the London Students Newspaper on a newspaper workshop to better equip Sixth-Formers when it comes to analysing the information they read whilst also giving them the ability to express their own ideas on paper. Secondly, we shall run a workshop on the uses and forms of Aid, and their effectiveness. This will hopefully touch upon wider issues such as development whislt at the same time broadening the knowledge of the attendees on the current affairs of many developing countries. Both of these workshops shall be run in small groups, shall last for eight weeks after school for two hours per week and shall have guest workshop leaders with different experiences taking each session with university students in support.
Finally, we hope to release two editions of our in-house magazine this year. We intend to make this a high quality magazine putting high profile and interesting guest writers alongside student journalists in the hope of offering London's university students their first high-quality, political magazine.
We would like to welcome students to volunteer and help out in all aspects of the organisation, from advertising and events management all the way to helping our Chief Editor David Vajda write and edit articles for the magazine. So if any of what we plan to do in the next year interests you, or you have any questions, please email; mail@newturn.org.uk for further information.
